Traditional yet Modern Push Door Handle-less Shaker Design Kitchen

At a time when most people are extending rather than moving properties, the average home owner has a dilemma: when building a modern extension on the back of a Victorian brick house or flat, should one keep to a traditional style, to match the house’s architecture, or should you go modern, to match the extension?

There are, of course, no rules in design other than to please the beholder… but if you’re thinking about moving on some day and don’t want the hassle and cost of shelling out for another kitchen, there is a way to still feel modern and fresh, with all the latest trends, gadgets, and design tricks, whilst still appealing to the more traditionally minded.

For older properties that will sell as much for their period character as their location, that cold, ultra-modern handle-less look can miss the warmth and timeless style that many want from their kitchen. But handle-less doors don’t have to mean black or white gloss. Matt painted doors – which have the feel of eggshell paint – are more timeless than the gloss doors that work best in ultra-modern designs. And you can still keep up to date with a simple Shaker style door instead of plain, if you ditch those busy handles.

In fact, the Handle-less Shaker look works as well in a modern extension or older buildings. For our own kitchen, we used unfussy, clean shaker handle-less doors with plain unbevelled frames and inserts, with a “lip” at the top of each door for easy opening (more timeless and reliable than push-opening catches). Then we teamed these with light, functional quartz worktops, to keep a bright fresh, spacious feel, without feeling to cold or clinical.

Adding lots of colour needn’t mean being garish. Even a simple off-white can create an instant feeling of comfort and cosiness, as light reflects off the different tones. Many light colours now available might seem simply plain cream or grey at first, but look closer and you’ll see hints of green, blue, pink, violet, bringing a warmth that plain white lacks. And the same goes for black; instead of plain black that can be quite deadening, you could try a very dark graphite, brown or burgundy, with all the depth of tones those colours can bring.

If the design base for your kitchen is solid, stylish and timeless, you can still have a lot of fun with the little additions you add - a splash of colour with a picture or small appliance, a sense of space with a mirror, colourful tiling, exposed brickwork, or decorative splashbacks, perhaps… adding value to your property as you create a space that is absolutely right for you and your personality, without putting off any future buyers!

From Corbusier’s sleek lines and white spaces, to 1960s white space pods and shiny handle-less modern kitchens, the sleek, bright, modern minimalist look is a favourite design theme time and time again. But in the leafy suburbs of West London, filled with beautiful Victorian and Edwardian architecture, not everyone wants bright, white and futuristic for the heart of their home…
